Ecological Restoration

The Kisenjyo area, located in the southeast of CTER, is comprised of about 30ha of abandoned, terraced paddy fields. CTER restores and manages about 100 abandoned paddy fields in Kisenjyo as biotopes in cooperation with the land owners and NPOs to fulfil several mutually supportive goals:

1. To conserve and restore biodiversity and ecosystem functioning of the region.
2. To provide foraging and roosting habitats for crested ibis and other birds.
3. To provide a field station for researchers.
4. To provide educational opportunities through the JST, practical training and internship programmes.
5. To maintain the traditional agricultural landscape of the region.

The restoration activities in Kisenjyo are expected to provide a model case for restoration of abandoned farmland.
