Researchers and staff at CTER have various academic backgrounds such as Molecular Biology, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Information and Communication Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Law, Environmental Education and Ethnology. In October 2010, CTER started an environmental education programme in cooperation with Sado City, Ministry of the Environment, Agricultural Association, Tourism Association and Forestry Association. The education programme, sponsored by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), aims to teach professionals, local residents and university students about the science of Ecological Restoration. Those who have completed the JST programme are expected to play key roles in leading and promoting ecological restoration in Sado Island as well as developing the local economy using the natural resources.

The JST programme is consisted of the following 5 courses:

●Environmental Agriculture & Forestry
●Toki Monitoring
●Eco-tourism
●Environmental Education
●Environmental Administration

In the first year (October 2010-September 2011) of the JST programme, 75 students registered for the courses. By the end of the fifth year (September 2014), CTER aims to train 280 restoration leaders.

Researchers and staff at CTER also give lectures to school children, host or attend public symposia and provide scientific information to private entities upon request.
